Paraburdoo is one of our longest-running iron ore operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, having started production in 1972.

Located around 80 kilometres southwest of Tom Price, the site rests on the traditional lands of the Yinhawangka people, and includes our Eastern Range, Channar, Paraburdoo and Western Range projects.

Western Range

Together with joint venture partner China Baowu Group, we officially opened Western Range – our newest and 18th iron ore mine in the Pilbara – alongside Yinhawangka Traditional Owners.

Western Range is a major iron ore development in the Pilbara region, jointly developed by Rio Tinto (54%) and China Baowu Steel Group (46%). The mine is designed to sustain production from the Paraburdoo operations, with a capacity of 25 million tonnes per year.

Key infrastructure includes:

  • A primary crusher
  • An 18-kilometre conveyor to the Paraburdoo processing plant

The project is expected to support approximately 1,600 construction jobs, with a strong emphasis on residential and FIFO workforce stability.

With the opening of the Western Range at Paraburdoo Operations, the hub now has capacity to produce up to 25 million tonnes of iron ore annually. This expansion supports the longevity of Paraburdoo for up to 20 years.

Western Range provides stability for more than 880 residential and FIFO employees in Paraburdoo. It also strengthens the Western Australian and national economies through royalties and taxes.
