Our history dates back more than 150 years to the Rio Tinto copper mines in Huelva, Spain. Over time, our operations have expanded globally, while Europe and the Middle East have remained closely connected to the business. Today, the region is home to operational activities while also supporting our global operations, customers and partners.

Operation

Our Bromborough facility in England has been serving Europe and international markets for over 40 years, supplying butyllithium and organometallic compounds to the polymer and pharmaceutical industries.

ISAL

Operation

Our ISAL aluminium smelter in Hafnarfjörður in Iceland began operations in 1969, with a capacity of 33,000 tons. Today, it produces 202,000 tonnes of some of the highest quality aluminium billets with the lowest carbon footprint aluminium in the world. 100% of our electricity is generated from clean, renewable energy, supplied by the National power company Landsvirkjun.

Jadar

Project

In 2004, Rio Tinto geologists discovered Jadarite, a new mineral containing lithium and boron. Jadarite, named after the Jadar River, is located near the city of Loznica in Western Serbia. The Jadar deposit is a world-class resource that could potentially provide the foundation of a new electric vehicle supply chain in Serbia.

Sohar

Non-managed operation

Sohar Aluminium, which began operating in 2008, is the Sultanate of Oman’s first greenfield aluminium smelter. Approximately 60% of the production is earmarked for sale as liquid metal to local downstream industries, while the rest is exported as solid aluminium.
