We’ve been part of the resources sector in Australia and New Zealand for more than a century.

From origins in 1905 at a small, speculative zinc operation in Broken Hill, New South Wales, our Australian operations have since expanded across the country, contributing to a thriving resources sector. And in New Zealand, our story started in 1971 when the first aluminium was produced at Tiwai Point, marking the beginning of more than 50 years of working alongside communities and supporting the nation’s economy.

Today, we operate in 35 countries, but our roots in Australia and New Zealand run as deep as ever.
Our Australian story

Our Australian story

From Weipa, at the northern tip of Queensland, to Brisbane, from Tasmania’s Bell Bay to Gove in the Northern Territory, and from Perth to the vast landscapes of the Pilbara and the Kimberley, Australia is home to almost half our global business and employees.

More than 23,000 people work with us each day to produce iron ore, salt, bauxite, alumina and aluminium, to responsibly close and rehabilitate mine sites, to bring copper and scandium projects to life, and to explore the country for materials the world needs for a low carbon future.

Working with Australian communities

We’ve been working alongside Australian communities for many years - supporting local and national initiatives that aim to deliver meaningful, long-term benefits. By tackling shared challenges, and working collaboratively with communities, organisations and governments, we can help strengthen resilience and unlock opportunities more widely.

In Australia, we have 2 connected streams:

  • local partnerships that respond to community needs where we operate
  • a national strategy focused on broader social issues with local relevance.

In 2024, we directly invested more than A$65 million into community programs. But our contribution goes beyond funding. Our people also share their time, skills and experience - helping to build capacity and support lasting change.

We support programs that improve safer living conditions; drive health equality and access to quality healthcare; and provide equal access to education and economic opportunity. We back initiatives that uphold human rights and foster inclusion - particularly for Indigenous Australians , women, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disability and others in vulnerable situations.

Our Australian sports partnerships

We're partners in a range of programs, developed to strengthen our connections with communities through the power of sport.

Australian Athletics

Since 2022, we have been promoting athletics and its positive impacts on young people in regional and remote areas. The flagship program – Athletics for the Outback – brings athletics to our host communities and helps Indigenous students take their sport to the next level. Our employees volunteer at Australian Athletics events, and benefit from the expertise of coaches, dieticians, and professional athletes, who provide advice on topics from leadership and healthy living to how to improve running speed.

Perth Lynx

Perth Lynx and Wildcats

We joined forces with the Perth Lynx and Wildcats basketball teams in 2023. Our partnership brings together 2 iconic Western Australia sporting groups and our local employees as supporters. We are empowering athletes from both teams to excel, on and off the court. Our aim is to provide pathways for more Western Australians to play basketball, and to increase the visibility of women playing sport at professional level.
More
We're boosting the Wildcats' community and elite programs, including a new academy supporting 25 high-potential athletes, aged between 14 and 19 from various backgrounds.

Our funding of the Lynx has gone towards strengthening the development of an academy program, and allowed the team to operate at their maximum Women's National Basketball League sanctioned salary cap.

Juukan Gorge

In allowing the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters to occur, we fell far short of our values as a company and breached the trust placed in us by the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we operate. We have spent the time since making major changes right across our business to better protect cultural heritage.

Our presence in New Zealand

New Zealand Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) has been part of New Zealand’s aluminium industry for more than 50 years.

In 1971, NZAS produced the first aluminium at Tiwai Point, near Bluff. Since then, the smelter has grown, now employing around 1,300 people and contributing significantly to New Zealand’s economy.

From casting our one-millionth tonne of aluminium to setting production records, we’ve continually invested in upgrades that improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Alongside production milestones, we’ve invested in the local community – supporting education, safety initiatives, and heritage projects like restoring Invercargill’s historic water tower.

Today, NZAS remains a key part of our global operations.
