Supporting Australian bushfire relief and recovery

Last updated: 1 October 2020

The Australian bushfire crisis has had a devastating impact on lives and communities throughout the country. Already, the fires have destroyed thousands of homes and millions of hectares, with tragic effects on lives, livelihoods and wildlife.

To help support affected communities, we have donated A$1 million to the Australian Red Cross relief efforts.

Additionally, we are matching employee donations to a variety of organisations, up to A$1 million. Charities include Foodbank Victoria, Hunter Wildlife Rescue, NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW State Emergency Service, among others.

For our employees affected by the fires and those involved in firefighting and relief efforts, we are ensuring they receive full leave entitlements and are continuing to explore other ways to help affected communities.

How is Rio Tinto contributing to the bushfire relief effort?

We are donating A$1 million to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery.

We will also be matching employee donations up to A$1 million. Our employees can choose from a range of bushfire charities they wish to support. And we are also supporting our employees involved in firefighting and relief efforts with full leave entitlements. Finally, we are exploring other ways to help affected communities, including in-kind support.

What will the funds be used for?

The funds will be used to help Red Cross emergency service teams provide vital support to impacted communities including:

  • Safe places to take shelter
  • Psychological first aid to reduce trauma
  • Information and practical assistance through the time it can take to recover
  • Longer-term recovery programmes in affected communities

Which areas will the funds be used for?

Assistance will be provided Australia-wide.
