Yarwun refinery recruiting for talented trainees

14 December 2017

Rio Tinto Yarwun alumina refinery’s 2018 process technician trainee programme is now open with Gladstone locals encouraged to apply.

The programme has launched exciting careers for workers in the region since 2004.

Successful candidates will undergo a structured training programme to learn how to monitor, operate and maintain the plant in line with ongoing safety, quality, production and cost objectives.

A Certificate III in Process Plant Operations will be awarded to trainees at the successful completion of the fixed term 18-month programme.

When Kris Jeffery entered the trainee programme in 2004 he was excited by the opportunity to work at a brand new refinery. Since then Kris has had multiple roles across Yarwun including his current position as a shift controller responsible for coordinating the operations of the refinery to safely and efficiently maximise production.

Kris said "Working at an alumina refinery was daunting at first but the structured programme meant that we learnt all about the equipment and production process.

"I would say to anyone interested to give it a try. If you prove yourself, the career opportunities are endless.

"The best thing about the Yarwun refinery is that it has a diverse workforce so you are always meeting interesting people. My trainee mentor and coach was a Korean judo champion!" said Kris.

To succeed in this role, applicants will need to show experience working in a team environment, a willingness to learn and to solve problems. A minimum of Year 10 or equivalent secondary education is required to apply.

Rio Tinto Yarwun Operations general manager Colin McGibbon said "We are proud of our process technician trainee programme which continues to provide career opportunities for locals.

"Our process technicians include former chefs, hairdressers, business owners and landscapers. We value diversity and understand that different experiences and skill sets can only enhance the refinery. I would encourage people from all backgrounds to apply."

The refinery is located 10km north-west of Gladstone in central Queensland and is wholly-owned and operated by Rio Tinto.

Applications close on 29 December 2017. For more information and to apply, please visit http://bit.ly/GladstoneTrainees
