SUPERIOR, Arizona--Rio Tinto has donated $1 million to support relief efforts in Arizona following severe floods in the City of Globe and Town of Miami late last month and additional flooding that occurred this past weekend that caused widespread damage to local communities and businesses.
The donation to the United Fund of Globe-Miami will help provide emergency food, cleaning supplies, and support long-term recovery for families and businesses impacted by the disaster.
In addition to financial support, Rio Tinto’s Resolution Copper, a 55:45 joint venture with BHP in Arizona, has contributed to emergency response efforts including mobilising local contractors for street and road clean up as well as donating cleaning supplies, fans and shovels to help local businesses begin recovery.
Rio Tinto Copper Chief Executive Katie Jackson said: “Our hearts go out to our friends and neighbours in Globe and Miami who have been deeply impacted by these devastating floods. We know the road to recovery will be long and challenging, but we are committed to supporting the community by providing resources, assistance, and partnerships to help rebuild and restore.
“This reflects our broader commitment at Rio Tinto to working hand in hand with communities around the world to help foster resilience and create lasting benefits wherever we operate.”
To further assist, Rio Tinto will match any employee donations to relief efforts. The donation is part of Rio Tinto’s disaster response program, which provides support in times of need to communities where the company operates.
