Gove Operations

Gove Operations

Gove Operations is located on the Gove Peninsula in North East Arnhem land in the Northern Territory. It is situated on extensive deposits of high-grade bauxite, a burnished red ore with high aluminium oxide content. Bauxite mining began in 1971 to supply the export market.

Gove bauxite is shipped internationally as well as domestically to supply Queensland Alumina Limited and Rio Tinto Yarwun refineries in Gladstone, Queensland. These refineries produce alumina as feedstock for Australian aluminium smelting operations and for sale on the international market.

In 2013, Rio Tinto suspended alumina production at the Gove Alumina Refinery and in 2017, announced that it would not restart the Gove Alumina Refinery and as such, is progressing plans to demobilise the refinery infrastructure and commence rehabilitation of the Residue Disposal Area.

Gove Operations is expected to cease mining bauxite on the Gove Peninsula in approximately 2030.

In 2011, the historic Gove Traditional Owners Agreement was signed with the Gumatj, Rirratjingu and Galpu Traditional Owners. Rio Tinto is the first operator in 40 years to formally acknowledge the Traditional Owners to establish an agreement. The agreement provides mutual benefits including economic development, employment and training, land and environmental management, financial benefits, protection of cultural and significant sites and contracting business opportunities.
