Buy Local Australia

In Australia, our diverse supply chain makes operating mines and refineries across regional and remote locations possible.

We have a long history in Australia, and we’re committed to working with Indigenous and local businesses to support the many Australian communities we operate in or near.

Through our Buy Local initiative, we partner with Australian businesses in communities we operate in or near, big and small, to source the goods and services we need. It’s about providing opportunities that help Indigenous and local businesses grow, and in doing so creating new jobs and training opportunities for many Australians.

Indigenous and local suppliers are an important part of building strong local economies and communities. By increasing opportunities for Indigenous and local suppliers, we can improve long-term benefits for the regions we operate in.

Across the Pilbara region in Western Australia, our integrated operations use leading technology to mine and transport iron ore to our customers safely, efficiently and in response to market conditions. This includes a network of 17 iron ore mines, 4 independent port terminals, a 2,000 kilometre rail network and related infrastructure.

Dampier Salt Limited has operations in Dampier and Port Hedland, it's the world's largest exporter of seaborne salt. It’s the world's largest exporter of seaborne salt.

In Paterson Province, we discovered copper-gold mineralisation in 2017, and then started establishing our greenfield Winu project. We’re still developing the project, and first ore remains subject to regulatory and other required approvals.

And in the remote East Kimberley region to the north, at our now-closed Argyle diamond mine we’re working closely with Traditional Owners to rehabilitate the land and return it to them.

We’re a global leader in aluminium, operating bauxite mines and alumina refineries as well as smelters that produce aluminium certified as responsible.

Our aluminium business has been supplying world-class bauxite for more than 40 years. We operate bauxite mines in Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory and Weipa in Far North Queensland, with processing facilities, ports, power stations, a rail network and related infrastructure.

In Gladstone, on Queensland’s central coast, the Yarwun alumina refinery produces more than 3 million tonnes of alumina per year. Alumina is exported globally or as feedstock to our smelting operations.

Boyne Smelting operations is situated 30 kilometres from Yarwun in Gladstone. We also have smelting operations in Bell Bay, Tasmania and the Tiwai Peninsula in Southland, New Zealand.

Supplier payment terms

We know it’s important that small businesses are paid in a timely manner. We offer small Australian suppliers shorter payment terms to ensure they are paid within 14 days of receipt of a valid invoice.

These payment terms apply to businesses who supply us up to A$1 million of goods and services, or those with an annual turnover up to A$10 million.

Shorter payment terms, and ongoing work to simplify and systemise our procurement processes, reflect a commitment to improve our partnership with suppliers.

If you’re a small Australian supplier seeking more information about our payment terms or believe you qualify for our Australian small business 14-day payment terms, please contact VendorFeedback@riotinto.com.
