Women in Leadership program

Do you want to make a positive, lasting impact?

What if you could do that in a role where hard work, dedication and outside-the-box thinking is not just encouraged, but rewarded?

Our Women in Leadership program is your opportunity to make that future a reality.

At Rio Tinto, we know inclusive and diverse workplaces deliver better safety outcomes, improved financial performance, higher productivity, increased innovation and better decision-making.

Through our Women in Leadership program, we’re increasing the number of women in our operational leadership teams by recruiting talented women into roles where they are supported to develop their skills and contribute to positive cultural change.

No experience in the mining industry is required – we are interested in your dedication to achieving your leadership potential and your unique skills and experience.

You may have never considered mining, or feel that your current career path is your set future. But with Rio Tinto, you will be joining some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop your career with us are broad and exciting.

Successful applicants will be supported by tailored mentoring, networking, coaching, and education programs to enhance their leadership, technical, safety and business capabilities.

Current opportunities

Pacific Operations

We are looking for passionate women who are ready to become leaders in our Pacific Operations business at operations in Queensland, the Northern Territory, Tasmania, and New Zealand.

In 2021, we piloted Women in Leadership at our Gladstone Aluminium operations, welcoming 15 women as developing leaders across our three sites.

In 2022, we are expanding the program across our Pacific Operations and launching a new Development Program for external applicants alongside an internal program that identifies existing employees with leadership potential. Successful applicants will begin in their new roles from August 2022.

Applicants must have full working rights for the country they are applying to work in.

Applications for the first round of the 2022 Women in Leadership Pacific Operations program closed on 8 May.

In June, we will begin recruitment for our next round, recruiting developing crew leaders for our Weipa, Gove, NZAS and Bell Bay sites. Keep an eye on this page in early June for more information.

Iron Ore Operations

We’re looking for passionate women to join our teams in the Pilbara as a Leader, Maintenance Scheduler or Maintenance Planner.

Experience in the mining industry is not required for these positions. When you join us, we’ll support your move into mining operations through a thoughtfully designed programme, and help you to expand your career on a global scale.

Leadership pathway

Do you know how to get the best out of people, guide teams to achieve collective and individual goals, and lead with care, courage and curiosity? Then we want you to join our team!

Maintenance Scheduler / Planner pathway

Do you want to use your existing skills to support the success of our business by scheduling and planning critical maintenance work on assets at our mine sites? Although this is not a leadership pathway directly, it will open exciting possibilities for your career in mining, as well as future leadership opportunities.

I get the best of both worlds with this program – I get to interact with people and share my leadership knowledge, while being out in the field around massive machinery."
