Maintaining the health and safety of our employees and the communities in which we operate is our highest priority. Our goal is to have no incidents or injuries at all.
The modernised Kitimat smelter was designed with the most up to date safety management systems to deliver world class safety and environmental performance for our employees and the communities in which we operate.
Running a high-performance aluminium smelter while protecting workers requires a focus on safety from everyone involved, from executive leadership to hands-on operations.
One of the key measures of safety is the ‘All Injury Frequency Rate’, or AIFR. AIFR scores represent the number of injuries of a minimum threshold of seriousness over the number of hours worked. BC Works AIFR score has improved 70% since 2012, falling from 0.90 to 0.24, far below the Aluminium Division’s 0.4 average.
Ultimately though, the success of the safety culture at BC Works falls to the men and women who perform a multitude of various tasks day in, day out. The BC Works philosophy is that safety doesn’t end at the plant gate; it should be at the front of everyone’s mind, at work, at home and in between.
Our safety standards are aligned with broader Rio Tinto safety standards and all employees and contractors and are audited regularly to improve our performance.
Promoting safe practices
We believe that all incidents and injuries are preventable and are committed to protecting our people from harm by eliminating hazards in the workplace. Together with our employees, we work to continuously improve safety performance by raising safety awareness, enhancing safety skills through training and implementing systems that assess the risk of operational hazards. To achieve our health and safety goals, we:
- foster a culture that doesn’t tolerate threats to health, safety and the environment
- ensure the real and active involvement of all employees and contractors
- hold our leaders accountable for improving HSE performance and providing the resources to do so support our teams with the right systems
