Peter was appointed Group executive, Strategy and Development in 2020. He leads the company’s corporate strategy development as well as our portfolio transformation efforts – including closure, business development and exploration – working in close partnership with the product group and commercial teams.
Peter joined Rio Tinto in 2014 as global head of strategy. In 2015, he became head of corporate development with responsibility for corporate strategy – including climate strategy – and business development. In this role, Peter oversaw the rationalisation of our commodity and asset portfolio with significant divestments worth $12 billion, including the company’s exit from fossil fuels. Peter also led the development and launch of our 10-year climate change targets to 2030, alongside our longer term ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
With over 25 years’ experience working in the resources industry around the world, Peter spent 14 years in various commercial roles with BHP and was the chief executive of ASX listed OM Holdings, an integrated manganese and silicon company, between 2008 and 2014.
