Providing sustainable aluminium to fans of the Montreal Canadiens

For generations, Rio Tinto has proudly partnered with Quebecois to provide the aluminium that global industry needs. Now we’re partnering with one of Quebec’s most iconic organizations – the Montreal Canadiens – to provide fans with infinitely recyclable cups made from aluminium produced locally in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region for use at their home, the Bell Centre.

The cups are expected to replace 1.5 million single-use plastic cups annually, which represents approximately 24 tonnes of plastic removed from the environment. Unlike plastic, aluminium is infinitely recyclable; in fact, an estimated 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still being used today.

This innovative partnership reflects our commitment – and that of our 4,000+ employees in Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean – to producing the most low-carbon aluminium possible, right here in Quebec. Demand for low-carbon aluminium is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years because it is a vital element of green technologies and a more sustainable future.
