Les travaux du projet Wabush 3 de la Compagnie minière IOC sont officiellement débutés. Les employés et les équipements nécessaires ont été mobilisés cette semaine.
Dexter Mining, une entreprise en provenance de Labrador Ouest a obtenu le contrat visant les travaux de terrassement préliminaires pour la construction du nouveau puits de la mine. Environ 70 employés de cette entreprise travailleront à Wabush 3 tout au long du projet.

« Le fait qu’une entreprise de la région travaille au projet Wabush 3 constitue une bonne nouvelle pour Terre-Neuve et Labrador », affirme Clayton Walker, président et chef de la direction d’IOC.
« Chez IOC, le développement responsable à long terme nous tient à cœur et Wabush 3 est un projet important pour la communauté de Labrador Ouest.
Il nous aidera grandement à renforcer la durabilité de nos opérations, qui profiteront aux générations futures dans la région.
Nous sommes très heureux de la forte mobilisation de nos employés, entrepreneurs et parties prenantes à l’égard de ce projet et nous sommes tous ravis de voir les travaux débuter. »
La production de minerai devrait commencer au cours du second trimestre de 2018. Wabush 3 aidera IOC à remplir son engagement à créer un avenir durable, en fournissant une source additionnelle de minerai de fer qui appuiera nos activités à long terme.
Wabush 3 est un nouveau puits de mine qui jouxtera la mine actuelle. Il permettra de prolonger la vie de la mine, de réduire les coûts d’exploitation et d’accroître la production de concentrés et de boulettes de fer de haute qualité. Le projet, qui représente un investissement de 79 millions de dollars CA, a été approuvé en février dernier.
IOC vise à être la première société minière en importance en Amérique du Nord. Elle est déterminée à moderniser ses actifs et son modèle d’exploitation dans le but de devenir un producteur à faibles coûts de concentrés et de boulettes de fer de haute qualité pour l’industrie de l’acier.
