Rio Tinto a donné le coup d’envoi à la mise en service de filtres-presses à la fine pointe de la technologie à sa raffinerie d'alumine Vaudreuil, au Québec. Le projet est donc complété six semaines avant la date prévue et en-deçà de son budget de 250 millions de dollars canadiens.
Les nouveaux filtres-presses offrent des avantages environnementaux importants en faisant passer la raffinerie à l'entreposage de résidus de bauxite asséchés et prolongeront la durée de vie du site, qui soutient 1 000 emplois dans la région du Saguenay – Lac-St-Jean. Les presses seront pleinement opérationnelles au début de l'année 2020.
Sébastien Ross, directeur exécutif des opérations de Rio Tinto au Québec, mentionne : « La mise en service des filtres-presses à la fine pointe de la technologie démontre l'engagement de Rio Tinto à investir dans la durabilité de ses actifs de classe mondiale ici au Québec et au Canada. Le passage à l'entreposage à sec profitera à la collectivité locale et à notre exploitation en réduisant la superficie nécessaire au stockage des résidus de bauxite et en facilitant la réhabilitation du site ». Celui-ci poursuit : « Je tiens à remercier nos employés et nos partenaires pour leur travail exceptionnel dans le cadre de ce projet, qui contribuera à assurer l’avenir de l’Usine Vaudreuil. »
Quatre presses de 85 tonnes munies de la toute dernière technologie ont été installées à la raffinerie. Le procédé de filtration industrielle consiste à appliquer une pression mécanique sur les résidus de bauxite afin de les assécher, facilitant ainsi leur entreposage. Les nouvelles presses permettront d’assécher les résidus en seulement 17 minutes, au lieu des trois ans qu'il faut compter actuellement.
Lancé en février 2018, le projet a généré 120 millions de dollars en retombées économiques pour les entreprises locales, qui ont joué un rôle important dans les efforts d'approvisionnement, d'ingénierie et de construction. À son apogée, 330 personnes travaillaient à la construction du site. Alors que 98 % des travaux sont achevés, le projet a affiché un solide bilan de sécurité, aucun blessé n'ayant été consigné jusqu'à présent.
