Rio Tinto est la première entreprise au monde à recevoir la certification Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), la plus haute norme internationalement reconnue pour ses pratiques environnementales, sociales et de gouvernance robustes tout au long du cycle de production, d'utilisation et de recyclage.
En utilisant de l'aluminium certifié ASI, les fabricants et les utilisateurs finaux seront désormais en mesure de démontrer leur engagement envers une chaîne d'approvisionnement durable.

Rio Tinto est fier d’avoir franchi cette étape marquante en devenant la première entreprise à obtenir la certification ASI. Pionniers de la production d’aluminium responsable, nous continuons d’être le chef de file de l'industrie en matière de développement durable et de production responsable, en travaillant en étroite collaboration avec nos clients afin de répondre à leurs besoins. En 2016, nous avons lancé RenewAlMC, le premier aluminium certifié à faible teneur en carbone. Nous produisons dans nos usines d'électrolyse de l’aluminium de l’une des meilleures qualités et dont l’empreinte carbone est parmi les plus faibles au monde. »
« L'aluminium produit de manière responsable joue un rôle clé dans le progrès humain. Matériau de choix pour réduire l’empreinte carbone et augmenter le recyclage d'un large éventail de produits finis, depuis l’emballage alimentaire aux bâtiments, en passant par les avions, voitures, téléphones mobiles et ordinateurs. »
La certification fait suite à un audit indépendant et couvre les diverses étapes de la chaîne de valeur: extraction de la bauxite, affinage de l'alumine, électrolyse de l’aluminium, fabrication de produits à valeur ajoutée, transformation et recyclage et activités connexes.
Les cinq alumineries de Rio Tinto, la raffinerie Vaudreuil, les centres de coulée, l’usine de traitement de brasque ainsi que les infrastructures connexes telles que les installations hydroélectriques, portuaires et ferroviaires du Québec ont été certifiées. La certification s’applique également la mine de bauxite Gove en Australie. Rio Tinto travaillera maintenant avec l'ASI sur les audits et les certifications de ses autres sites du groupe aluminium mondial.
