Rio Tinto reçoit le prix d’excellence corporative du Conseil des affaires canado-américaines (CABC) pour son projet de modernisation de six milliards de dollars de son usine d’électrolyse Kitimat, en Colombie-Britannique, qui produit de l’aluminium dont l’empreinte carbone est parmi les plus faibles au monde.
Maryscott Greenwood, chef de la direction du CABC a déclaré: « Grâce à son engagement envers la durabilité et l’innovation, Rio Tinto a su s’imposer comme une entreprise de premier plan en Amérique du Nord. Nous tenons également à souligner son importante contribution à la création d’emplois et à la croissance économique.
« Ce prix souligne non seulement l’innovation dont Rio Tinto a fait preuve en modernisant son usine d’électrolyse de classe mondiale ici, en Amérique du Nord, mais il célèbre aussi les avantages de cette usine sur le plan environnemental et le partenariat à long terme de l’entreprise avec la communauté de Kitimat. »
Alf Barrios, chef de la direction, Rio Tinto Aluminium affirme : « Nous sommes fiers de célébrer les efforts remarquables que nos employés ont déployés pour mettre en place cette usine de pointe.
« Grâce à l’hydroélectricité propre et aux technologies évoluées de l’usine modernisée, nous produisons maintenant de l’aluminium dont l’empreinte carbone est parmi les plus faibles au monde.
« Le projet de modernisation de l’usine Kitimat nous a permis d’accroître la capacité de production de l’usine de près de 50 pour cent, et ce, tout en réduisant de moitié les émissions globales, d’où une amélioration de la performance environnementale. »
Chaque année, le CABC souligne l’engagement d’une entreprise envers la durabilité, l’innovation et la création d’emplois. Au cours des dernières années, Johnson & Johnson, Coca Cola et Campbell ont eux aussi eu droit aux honneurs.
Le prix Corporate Leadership est présenté à l’occasion du souper annuel State of the Relationship, à Ottawa, au Canada. Il souligne les liens entre le Canada et les États-Unis. Cette année, l’événement était axé sur l’importance des échanges commerciaux entre les deux pays. La soirée était également le premier événement public où assistait la nouvelle ambassadrice des États-Unis au Canada, Kelly Knight Craft.
