Rio Tinto investit pour maintenir la production d’anodes à son aluminerie Grande-Baie

SAGUENAY - Rio Tinto investira 165 millions de dollars américains (226 millions de dollars canadiens) à son aluminerie Grande-Baie pour effectuer la réfection de deux fours à cuisson des anodes qui arrivent à la fin de leur vie utile. L’entreprise réalisera également des études de faisabilité pour le remplacement éventuel des épurateurs et des ponts roulants du centre de production des anodes.
Les travaux de reconstruction de l'enveloppe en béton et du réfractaire des fours à cuisson des anodes s’échelonneront sur deux ans, en 2025 et 2026. Les nouveaux équipements permettront de continuer d’approvisionner en anodes de façon compétitive les usines Grande-Baie et Laterrière pendant les décennies à venir.
Rio Tinto compensera les émissions de carbone reliées au projet de construction grâce à différentes initiatives, comme la plantation d’arbres à proximité de l’aluminerie.
Martin Lavoie, directeur des opérations des usines Grande-Baie et Laterrière, a déclaré : « La réfection des fours à cuisson des anodes à notre aluminerie Grande-Baie est un investissement important qui contribuera à assurer la pérennité et la compétitivité de la production d’aluminium responsable dans la région pour les décennies à venir et génèrera des retombées économiques importantes. Nous sommes très heureux de réaliser ce projet au cours des prochaines années, en collaboration avec nos employés et partenaires d’affaires locaux. »
La majorité des retombées économiques associées au projet seront au Québec. Au sommet des travaux, environ 185 travailleurs seront présents sur le chantier.
Rio Tinto a complété le remplacement de ses fours à cuisson des anodes à son aluminerie Alma en 2021.
