LABRADOR CITY, Canada – La Compagnie minière IOC (IOC) a signé une entente avec la Ville de Labrador City en vertu de laquelle elle cédera à cette dernière 34 hectares de terrains estimés à environ 4,2 millions de dollars canadiens.
Les terrains cédés comprennent 17 lots distincts situés dans différents secteurs de l’agglomération et leur superficie totale équivaut à 48 terrains de football. Un lot sera mis en valeur par la Ville comme espace vert consacré aux aînés, avec des bancs et des panneaux à leur intention. Au cours des prochains mois, la Ville évaluera la meilleure façon de développer les autres lots au bénéfice de la communauté.L’annonce a été faite à Labrador Ouest à l’occasion d’un événement destiné aux leaders de la communauté, en présence de Mike McCann, président et chef de la direction d’IOC, et de Belinda Adams, mairesse de Labrador City.Mike McCann a déclaré : « Au cours des 70 dernières années, IOC s’est implantée solidement dans la communauté de Labrador Ouest et nous nous sommes épanouis ensemble. Toujours soucieux de soutenir l’économie locale grâce aux emplois et aux investissements, nous reconnaissons également que l’accès aux terres joue un rôle important dans la croissance et la prospérité à l’échelle régionale, et nous sommes ravis de redonner à la communauté en cédant ces terrains. » La mairesse Belinda Adams a ajouté : « IOC et la Ville de Labrador City ont une longue histoire de collaboration axée sur le développement économique, social et culturel de la communauté. Ces terrains qui nous sont cédés témoignent de la confiance d’IOC dans l’avenir de notre ville et ils nous fournissent un éventail de possibilités.
