SAGUENAY, Canada – Rio Tinto a mis en service un nouveau four de refonte à son usine Laterrière, ajoutant ainsi 22 000 tonnes de capacité de recyclage à ses opérations d'aluminium dans la région du Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean, au Québec.
Le projet, qui représente un investissement d’environ 11 millions de dollars canadiens, a été réalisé sur deux ans afin d'offrir aux clients de produits laminés des industries nord-américaines de l'automobile et de l'emballage une nouvelle solution d'approvisionnement durable combinant aluminium recyclé et à faible teneur en carbone.
Le four de refonte est équipé de brûleurs à haut rendement afin de minimiser son empreinte carbone. Le projet a permis de créer sept nouveaux emplois.
Sébastien Ross, directeur exécutif des Opérations Atlantique de Rio Tinto Aluminium, a déclaré : « L'aluminium est recyclable à 100 % et la demande de métal recyclé ne cesse de croître. Avec la mise en service de notre nouveau four de refonte, nous offrons désormais à nos clients une solution supplémentaire pour recycler les recoupes issus de leurs processus de fabrication et les transformer en alliages d'aluminium de haute qualité à faible teneur en carbone. Rio Tinto continuera à travailler en étroite collaboration avec ses clients et ses partenaires pour soutenir la transition vers une économie circulaire. »
Le service de recyclage des produits laminés complète la solution en boucle fermée que Rio Tinto a introduite pour les clients de billettes en 2021.
