MONTRÉAL, Canada – Cette année, Rio Tinto a marqué le début des 16 jours d'activisme contre la violence fondée sur le sexe en augmentant son soutien aux organisations locales qui aident les personnes subissant de la violence domestique.
Pour la troisième année de suite, Rio Tinto soutiendra des organisations à travers le Canada qui fournissent des refuges, des conseils, de l’éducation, des formations, des ateliers et des activités afin d’aider les femmes, les enfants et les membres de la communauté LGBTQ+ touchés par la violence conjugale à rebâtir leur vie. Pour 2022, l’entreprise a fait passer sa contribution à un total de 450 000 dollars canadiens. Ces fonds seront répartis entre 17 organisations. Il est troublant de constater que la violence conjugale envers les femmes est encore trop courante. Selon Statistique Canada, plus de quatre femmes sur dix ont subi une forme ou une autre de violence entre partenaires intimes au cours de leur vie. Cette statistique est nettement plus élevée au sein de la communauté LGBTQ+ que chez les hétérosexuels.Le chef de la direction de Rio Tinto Aluminium, Ivan Vella, a déclaré : « Chez Rio Tinto, nous croyons que chaque personne a le droit de se sentir en sécurité. Nous voulons contribuer à la fois à prévenir la violence conjugale et à protéger les gens qui en souffrent. Nos employés peuvent bénéficier de congés payés supplémentaires, d’un hébergement d’urgence et d’un soutien financier s’ils subissent de la violence familiale ».« Notre engagement pour le respect et la sécurité de tous s’étend également aux communautés : nous soutenons les organisations locales qui apportent une aide cruciale afin d’assurer la sécurité des femmes, des enfants et des membres de la communauté LGBTQ+ partout au Canada. »La responsable du soutien clinique de SOS Violence conjugale, Claudine Thibaudeau, a déclaré : « Que des organisations comme Rio Tinto se prononcent ainsi publiquement et qu'elles joignent leurs efforts aux nôtres pour aider les victimes de violence entre partenaires intimes, ça fait une vraie différence. Nous sommes reconnaissantes pour le soutien financier mais surtout pour la prise de position claire de Rio Tinto en faveur des victimes et d'un changement profond dans notre communauté. Parce que pour changer le monde, ça prend tout le monde ».
