Saguenay - STAS et Rio Tinto ont annoncé aujourd’hui la conclusion d’une entente de commercialisation portant sur une technologie de filtration compacte avancée (ACF) destinée aux centres de coulée d’aluminium. Cette entente prévoit que la technologie ACF sera désormais fabriquée et commercialisée sous licence par STAS et rendue disponible à l'échelle mondiale.
Cette technologie de filtration innovante a été développée au début des années 2000 par des chercheurs du Centre de recherche et de développement Arvida (CRDA) de Rio Tinto, situé au Québec, Canada. La technologie ACF est une solution de filtration optimale permettant d’éliminer plus de 90 % des inclusions (impuretés) dans l'aluminium liquide. Elle est notamment utilisée pour fabriquer des produits destinés à des applications critiques, tels que certains types de feuilles à haute valeur ajoutée servant par exemple à produire des canettes.
Rio Tinto a collaboré avec l’équipementier STAS, afin de concevoir et de fabriquer les premiers prototypes, qui ont été testés dans les centres de coulée de Grande-Baie et de Laterrière, où la technologie est utilisée avec succès depuis plus de dix ans. La commercialisation de la technologie ACF permettra désormais de maximiser la valeur qui en découle, ainsi que de soutenir la poursuite de son développement et de son évolution.
Louis Bouchard, président exécutif de STAS, a dit : « Nous croyons que la technologie ACF a un énorme potentiel commercial à l’échelle de l'industrie mondiale de l'aluminium et nous sommes convaincus que ce partenariat maximisera les retombées positives pour STAS et pour la région du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. »
Claude Dupuis, directeur, Technologie Coulée au CRDA a ajouté : « C’est en raison de l’expertise unique de ses chercheurs que le CRDA a su développer de nombreuses technologies innovantes, qui ont été largement adoptées et qui sont devenues la norme dans l'industrie. Nous sommes très fiers de nos chercheurs et de la relation de collaboration durable que nous avons établis avec STAS et d’autres équipementiers de la région. »
