Application Tips for Students & Graduates

Do the research

Read up about Rio Tinto, the role and what you need to apply for it. Research now saves time later.

Do not fill in your application form on the bus

Use a proper keyboard to limit the chances of typos, and go somewhere quiet enough for you to concentrate.

Look at all the sections before you start

You do not want any overlap between sections so plan what should go where.

Remember to check

You can always save an application and come back later to check it before you submit. You cannot change it once you have submitted it.

  • The system says my email address is not available. What should I do?

    It means a profile already exists. Try logging in and click ‘Forgot password’. Then you will receive a ‘Change password’ email with instructions. If you think someone else created a profile with your address, contact us ASAP at recruitment.support@riotinto.com.

  • How do I change or reset my password?

    Just log in, select ‘My profile’ and click on ‘Change password’.

  • I have forgotten my password. What should I do?

    Try logging in and click ‘Forgot password’. Then you will receive a ‘Change password’ email with instructions.

  • I have forgotten my username. What should I do?

    Your username is your email address.

  • I am having trouble accessing a job posting or experiencing technical difficulties. What should I do?

    Make sure your computer is set up as below. If that does not resolve it, contact recruitment.support@riotinto.com and include any error messages and/or screenshots.

    1. You will need to be using:

      a. Windows XP: Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, Firefox 3.5.

      b. Windows Vista: Internet Explorer 7 and 8, Firefox 3.5.

      c. With Windows 7: Internet Explorer 8 is supported as well as Firefox 3.5.

      d. Mac OS X 10.4 and above: Safari 3.x and Firefox 3.5 may work most of the time but not necessarily always. Try one of the configurations above if Mac is an issue.

    2. Occasionally settings in firewall or security software such as Norton, Symantec or McAfee interfere with the proper operation of online application features, such as toolbars. You may need to adjust these settings or temporarily disable the programs to proceed.
    3. Enable pop-ups in your web browser.
    4. So you do not get timed out, try to spend less than ten minutes on any given page.
    5. Try deleting the cookies and temporary internet files in the Tools > Internet Options menu of Internet Explorer.
    6. Enable cookies in your web browser.
  • I cannot upload my resume. What should I do?
    Ask recruitment.support@riotinto.com for technical help.
  • I have an issue not covered here. What do I do?

    Ask our support group recruitment.support@riotinto.com for help. Please note that they will not be able to advise you about your application or accept your resume.

  • I started an application but did not have time to finish it. What should I do?

    Simply go to the job search page and log in. You will be able to see your application there and continue. If nothing shows up, you will need to start again. It is always good practice to save what you have done.

  • Can I make changes to my application or withdraw?

    You cannot edit a submitted application, but you can withdraw it.

  • I cannot upload my resume. What should I do?
    Ask recruitment.support@riotinto.com for technical help.
  • What are the application requirements?
    They are outlined in the job ads. Just use the job search fields and click on the job title.
  • Where do I go to view and apply for roles?
    Visit our careers page and select Experienced Professionals or Graduates & students. If you know the full job number for a specific position you can enter it into the 'Keyword' field and click on the blue ‘SEARCH’ button. Or search with keywords. You can scroll through all our jobs from here.
  • I am having problems with the job search.
    Clear the search field and make sure any keywords are not too specific. If there are no jobs listed, it is possible that none match your search. Try searching again with fewer keywords. If you search using a job number and no results are returned, the job may no longer be available.
  • I did not see a position I am interested in.

    You can always join our talent network and register for 'Job Alerts'. Click the button on the top right of the job search page, fill in the fields and click ‘join’. Tell us how often you want job alert mails and we will send any about new jobs then.

    You can unsubscribe at any time. Just follow the link at the bottom of a Job Alert email.

  • Can I apply by post or email instead?
    No, sorry. You will need to apply online.
  • What does the employment screening involve?

    Employment screening checks are determined by the role and location, and could include identity, eligibility to work, qualifications, references and employment medicals. Additional checks including credit and criminal records are required for roles which pose greater legal, financial and reputational risk.
