Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) a investi 43 millions de dollars canadiens pour reconstruire et redémarrer un four à son complexe métallurgique de Sorel-Tracy, au Québec.
« Cet investissement, affirme Guy Gaudreault, directeur général du complexe métallurgique de Sorel-Tracy, s’inscrit dans notre stratégie visant à créer de la valeur et à répondre à la demande du marché.
« Le projet comprend l’installation d’une hotte de dépoussiérage sur le four permettant d’améliorer la qualité de l’air pour la communauté. »
Ce four, l’un des neuf du complexe métallurgique de Sorel-Tracy, avait été mis hors service en 2013 en raison des conditions difficiles du marché.
« La réfection du four a généré des retombées économiques positives pour la région, indique Monsieur Gaudreault. Des contrats totalisant environ 35 millions de dollars ont été octroyés à des entreprises locales, ce qui représente plus de 80 pour cent des dépenses auprès des fournisseurs dans le cadre du projet.« Près de 200 personnes ont travaillé à la réfection du four, notamment des opérateurs, des préposés à l’entretien, des ingénieurs, des spécialistes de l’approvisionnement et des finances ainsi que des travailleurs de la construction.
« De nombreux ateliers de fabrication à Sorel-Tracy ont été mobilisés aux fins du projet, et la construction s’est terminée il y a quelques semaines. »
RTFT transforme du minerai du nord du Québec depuis plus de 65 ans. Il est l’un des principaux fabricants de matières premières de dioxyde de titane, couramment utilisé comme pigment pour fabriquer des finis blancs de qualité supérieure. Il produit également du fer et de l’acier destinés à des applications hautement spécialisées, notamment dans les domaines de l’industrie automobile et de l’énergie éolienne.
