Innovation

Rio Tinto operations are among the most technologically advanced in the world.

In Australia, innovation has been a driving force and collaboration key to our success.

Through our Growth & Innovation team we look to harness the skills of our people and partners.

In the Pilbara we have led the way with industry automation with autonomous drills, trucks and trains. Our Operations Centre in Perth, some 1,500km away from our Pilbara operations, manages the real time complexity of our iron ore mines, railways, and ports.

Our Mine of the Future™ programme introduced next-generation technologies to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve health, safety and environmental performance. We have formed partnerships with leading external organisations – including universities and equipment producers.

Among other Mine of the Future™ projects, we are also developing block cave mining and rapid tunnel technologies that allow us to extract ore from large orebodies without having to dig an open pit at the surface.

At Bundoora in Melbourne our technical services teams have helped developed processing options for the Jadar lithium-borate project.

We have a proud record of discovery and the exploration team are using new technologies to look deeper, process more data, and identify indicator minerals that may help pinpoint large base metal deposits.
