Product stewardship
Rio Tinto is in the process of developing a product stewardship strategy to address issues relating to the Group's license to produce and market new and existing products. This will allow Rio Tinto to maintain and grow markets in the face of competition.
Stewardship activities include developing and implementing formal documented product stewardship programmes. These identify and manage the safety, health, environmental, social and economic risks and benefits of products across their value chains.
In 2005, Rio Tinto is reporting for the first time on product stewardship activities relating to this strategy, which include;
Implementation of formal product stewardship programmes
Engaging with customers on their product needs and issues
Effectively managing supplier issues affecting the value chain
Product impact assessments
