Eden Project (UK)

The Eden Project, in Cornwall, south west England, is an educational visitor attraction devoted to promoting the sustainable use of the planet's resources. It is an example of sustainable post mining regeneration, the site having been a working china clay pit for 150 years. Since it opened in 2001, the Eden Project has attracted over five million visitors.

Elements of the partnership between Rio Tinto and the Eden Project include:

  • Establishment of the Post Mining Alliance, with English Nature and Anglo American.
    • The Alliance aims to bring together networks and centres of excellence in the area of post mining regeneration and Education and training provision in mining and sustainable development.
  • Development of an exhibit on copper at the Eden Project, which aims to illustrate the dependence of humans on metals and minerals.
  • Donation of 35 tonnes of copper from Kennecott Utah Copper (US - a Rio Tinto subsidiary) to provide metal for the roof and related structures of the new Education Resource Centre - completed in 2005.
