Employment results
In 2005, Rio Tinto employed 32,000 people mainly concentrated in Australia and North America. Wages and salaries paid in 2005 totalled US$2.1 billion (excluding Rio Tinto’s proportionate share of joint ventures and associates).
In 2004, a review of Rio Tinto’s future leaders established the “Fostering Workforce Diversity” goals. These focus on the need to increase the representation of women in senior management to 20 per cent within five years and to increase by 50 per cent the proportion of women in the total graduate intake. Seven per cent of senior management in the Rio Tinto Group is female and the graduate recruitment rate for females is 23 per cent. One of our board members is female, as is the company secretary and one Executive Committee member. This means the gap between goal and actual remains but we are improving.
