Speak-OUT for employees

The Speak-OUT programme provides employees with an independent and confidential means of reporting concerns and communicating ideas to senior managers.

It has been developed to ensure that issues, which could give cause for concern to employees or to the company, are addressed in a confidential and timely manner.

It is very important to Rio Tinto that face to face communications are achieved whenever possible and it is not the intention for Speak-OUT to replace existing procedures and established practices. However, it is recognised that there are times when it is easier to talk to an independent person.

The system uses local freephones wherever possible, which are linked to an international professional call centre where calls are answered by trained counsellors. Interpreters are provided for most non English speaking callers. Details of the calls are passed in confidence to local senior managers for possible action and feedback is provided to all callers through the system.

Each month, a summary of all calls is sent to Rio Tinto's chief executive, relevant product group chief executives and to a representative of the Audit Committee.
