Global graduate employment

In 2005 the Rio Tinto Group employed more than 160 new or recent graduates in a range of disciplines. Graduates are generally recruited in their home countries, and many businesses have a policy of ensuring that at least some of the graduates are drawn from local universities. Most new recruits were drawn from engineering and commercial disciplines.

Most Rio Tinto companies provide vacation work opportunities or internships for undergraduate students as part of their education programme. The company also provides a range of scholarships and support for students both directly, through industry organisations and through universities.

In Australia, the company is a strong supporter of the government's National Indigenous Cadetship Programme, which aims to increase indigenous professional employment across the Group's Australian operations. Since 1999, 30 indigenous students have been selected for the programme. To date, ten cadets have graduated, five of which have been placed in graduate positions at Rio Tinto operations.

Annual vacation employment placements with business units are integral to building the skills of the cadets. The cadets are studying in diverse fields at various universities across Australia. Whilst there is a major business need to recruit students in some technical disciplines, candidates in other disciplines are also recruited. These include engineering (mechanical, physics, chemical, civil, surveying and processing), economics, law, geology, communications, human resources and information technology. Candidates are enrolled in first year through to fourth year, with some at fifth year depending on their course structures.
