Bursaries, internships and graduates

Bursaries

Every year we take on four to eight new bursars and support them for the duration of their studies.
To be considered for a bursary, an applicant should have aspirations to pursue one of the following disciplines:

  • Mining, electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering
  • Metallurgy
  • Geology/surveying/drilling
  • Chemistry
  • Environmental science
  • Accounting

Our bursary holders pursue their studies at South Africa's major tertiary institutions, including the universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, KwaZulu-Natal, Witwatersrand and Pretoria.

Upon successful completion of their studies, bursary holders are taken on as graduates-in-training. They are required to work for RBM for the same number of years for which their studies were financed.

Internships

Opportunities for internships are available at RBM. These are advertised internally and externally on local community noticeboards. Successful applicants are given a six-month contract as in-service trainees, which may be extended to a year if the need arises. Trainees can then apply for permanent, vacant positions that arise during their internship.

How do I apply?

Internships are advertised at local high schools around July each year and the closing date is usually a month later. RBM's recruitment team conducts the initial screening and candidate assessments. Short-listed candidates are then interviewed and successful candidates awarded bursaries.

Graduate programme

We strive to attract and develop the very best prospective employees as they graduate from universities. A dedicated two-year graduate development programme is designed to provide our graduate and post-graduate employees with genuine long-term career opportunities.

Once selected for the graduate development programme, you will be given a job with real accountabilities, provided with a development plan, technical training and development both on and off the job, exposure to senior management, and assignments designed to broaden and enhance your capabilities. In your second year you will also be allocated an experienced mentor.

RBM trainee graduates also may have the opportunity, from time to time, to meet and interact with other Rio Tinto trainee graduates hailing from internships at other Rio Tinto mines in other parts of the world.
