Rio Tinto Borates is a global leader in the supply and science of borates, used in hundreds of products and processes. We are 1,000 people serving more than 1,000 customers in 100 countries. We supply 30 per cent of the world’s need for refined borates from our world-class mine in Boron, California, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles.
We have more than 30 industrial, agriculture and speciality products that are sold under the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, known worldwide for its quality and American Old West heritage.
To serve this vast array of sectors, Rio Tinto Borates operates mining, refining and shipping facilities on four continents. We also maintain a global network of sales offices and stock points. Our researchers work to advance borate science, pioneering new products and applications that harness the many properties of this versatile resource.
Our borates portfolio includes development projects in new sectors:

- The Jadar lithium-borate project in Serbia
- The Roughrider (Canada) and Sweetwater (Wyoming) uranium projects
Borates are naturally-occurring minerals containing boron and other elements. Refined borates are a vital ingredient of many home and automotive applications, and are essential nutrients for crops. They are commonly used in glass and ceramic applications including fibreglass, television screens, floor and wall tiles, and heat resistant glass.
