The Wiri Yuwiburra Community Benefits Trust was established in 1998 through a negotiated goodwill agreement between members of the Wiri/Yuwiburra and Hail Creek Coal Pty Ltd (Hail Creek Coal). Following negotiations and as the relationship grew stronger, Hail Creek Coal agreed to provide an annual investment to the Trust. This investment is to support the community development aspirations of the local Aboriginal community for the life of the Hail Creek Mine.
In 2008, the Trust was relaunched and the shared active partnership has steadily thrived during this time.
Aboriginal people enjoy the same prospects for employment, economic prosperity and quality of life as other community members.
This has been achieved through investments in education, training, health, business development, personal development and achievement, and overall capacity building initiatives.
The Wiri Yuwiburra Community Benefits Trust Board of Trustees meets quarterly to assess applications.
