Rio Tinto Minerals is the world's largest salt exporter. Salt is indispensable to a wide array of automotive, construction and electronic products, as well as to water treatment, food and health care.
Rio Tinto Minerals mines and produces salt at three operations in Western Australia. At Dampier and Port Hedland the salt is produced from seawater. At Lake MacLeod the saturated brine is approximately 10 times saltier than normal seawater, eliminating the need for a series of concentration ponds normally required to evaporate water to reach "salting" point.
