Rio Tinto Minerals, through Rio Tinto Borax, operates California's largest open pit mine in Boron, California, which produced 538,000 tonnes of borates in 2006.
Rio Tinto Minerals also mines borates in the high deserts of Argentina's Salta province, with operations at Tincalayu, Sijes and the dry lake beds of Salar Cauchari and Salar Diablillos, located more than 14,000 feet above sea-level. Borates mined in Argentina are processed at the refinery at Campo Quijano.
