Local communities
Rio Tinto Alcan operates in hundreds of communities worldwide, touching the lives of many thousands in developed and developing countries where mining, refining, smelting and fabricating activities are conducted.
We are committed to building a sustainable future with our neighbours through mutually beneficial partnerships and programmes. Our operations have established community relations programmes to ensure ongoing business priorities remain relevant and consistent with those of the communities within which we operate. All managed operations work within their five year community plans, linking community programmes to business outcomes.
Rio Tinto Alcan established a Canada Forum comprising the chairman, chief executive, Canadian non-executive directors, other Canadian advisers and senior executives based in Canada, including the chief executive of Rio Tinto Alcan, to advise the Rio Tinto board on Canadian economic, political and social issues.
Rio Tinto has committed to creating the Rio Tinto Alcan Foundation in Canada, with an endowment of C$200 million built up over a five year period. It replaces Alcan's previous practice of donating one per cent of pre-tax Canadian profits to community, educational, cultural and charitable entities.
