Kennecott Utah Copper

Kennecott Utah Copper, based in Salt Lake City, supplies more than ten per cent of the US's refined copper. It also produces gold, silver, molybdenum and sulphuric acid as by-products. The planned maintenance shutdown at the smelter was completed safely, on time and on budget. In 2010 Kennecott Utah Copper produced 269 thousand tonnes of refined copper and 596 thousand ounces of refined gold. Kennecott Utah Copper is also commencing studies associated with the potential development of an underground copper skarn deposit to operate in parallel with the open pit.

Kennecott Eagle Minerals

Construction of the US$469 million Eagle nickel and copper mine in Michigan, US began in 2010, with first production expected in late 2013. The mine will produce on average 17,300 and 13,200 tonnes per year of nickel and copper metal, respectively, over six years. High quality sulphide nickel concentrates will increasingly be in short supply, and Eagle is one of the most attractive greenfield projects in the nickel industry pipeline. Eagle is located in a prospective region where Rio Tinto has significant land holdings and mineral rights.

La Granja

Based on exploration drilling, La Granja – in Peru's Cajamarca Region – is the world's ninth largest undeveloped copper resource. In 2010 evaluation work entered a divergent phase to assess the potential of new geological discoveries and to identify higher value, lower risk options for development. An optimal business case is still being developed. However, the project has a clear direction for development utilising conventional technologies which has yet to incorporate a recently discovered higher grade zone of mineralisation. Drilling will continue in 2011 to confirm the extent of the new mineralisation.

Richards Bay Minerals:(37%)

From the Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) (Rio Tinto 37 per cent) joint venture in South Africa, we produce ilmenite from mineral sand deposits. The RBM orebody is mined using a system of ponds and floating dredgers. The sands are sucked up into the dredges, where the heavy valuable minerals (ilmenite, zircon, rutile) are recovered, and the remaining sand particles are then used to reconstruct and rehabilitate the landscape after mining has finished.

RBM's product portfolio also includes rutile and zircon, two other minerals found in its sand deposits. Rutile is used in welding rod fluxes and in the manufacture of titanium metal as well as the production of pigment. Zircon's principal uses are in the ceramics (in particular bathroom tiles), foundry, chemicals and refractory industries.

Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique

Rio Tinto's 2011 acquisition of Riversdale provides the Group with a portfolio of coal assets in Mozambique consisting of the Benga project and the adjacent Zambeze project, as well as extensive additional exploration prospects in East Tete.

Since taking control in April 2011, we have already started to integrate our world-class operating and technical capability into these operations. Our focus is on actively growing this energy asset base by adding value from the group's extensive resources and building relationships with employees and external stakeholders.

For Rio Tinto the mines represent a Tier 1 resource – one with the potential for long life, that is cost competitive and that has an option for expansion. These assets sit alongside Rio Tinto's global coal resources in Australia and the US, and are helping fulfil the Group's objective of a portfolio that is diversified by geography, commodity and market.

Dampier:(68%)

Dampier Salt (DSL), the world's largest salt exporter, produces industrial salt by solar evaporation of sea water at Dampier, a coastal iron ore port that serves Rio Tinto's iron mines, and from underground brine at Lake MacLeod, both in Western Australia.

Dampier Salt operates with a salt stock policy which requires the retention of at least one year's sales as stock at the operations. This stock is held as a combination of dry product and as solid stock in the crystallisers.

The Dampier operation was the first and still the largest producer of the Dampier Salt site and was established in 1967, with the first shipment to Japan in 1972.

Port Hedland:(68%)

The Port Hedland operation is Dampier Salt's most recent acquisition, purchased in 2001, and covers just over 9000 hectares of operational area.

The production process at Port Hedland begins with sea water from the Indian ocean. Powerful pumps with a total capacity of 1640 cubic metres per minute transfer the seawater into a nine-pond concentration system. Salinity is increased through each step of the system, which spans 7,800 hectares. Gravity causes the seawater to flow through the initial concentration ponds after which transfer pumps life the brine to flow into the final concentration pond. The saturation of the original seawater has increased from 17 to 90 per cent.
