Government and corporate relations

Rio Tinto operates in an increasingly competitive and complex world with a multitude of influences that can affect our ability and our broad licence to operate. Our aim is to represent Rio Tinto's views to government and others on public policy, legislation and relevant issues. We undertake this work professionally and with integrity.

We recognise that the quality of relationships with national and international governments, industry and civil society plays a crucial role in protecting and enhancing Rio Tinto's value and reputation.

We are committed to the utmost transparency, consistent with good governance and commercial confidentiality. We constantly strive to conduct our business with integrity, honesty and fairness.

Rio Tinto is a signatory to a host of international commitments and standards, including the United Nations Global Compact, and we are dedicated to ensuring we meet them.

Mining is a heavily regulated industry and we maintain a continuous dialogue with many governments and public authorities at national, provincial and municipal levels. We regularly speak out on matters that affect our business interests, as well as those of our shareholders, employees and others involved in our activities.

Government relations

Rio Tinto represents its views as a company to governments and others on matters affecting our business interests, those of our shareholders, our employees and others involved in our activities.

Global partnerships programme

The Rio Tinto global partnership programme places strong emphasis on forming active relationships through partnerships, trusts, funds and foundations. We not only provide funds but, just as importantly, contribute technical and business management skills and participate in planning and implementation of each project.

Corporate engagement

We belong to a wide range of industry associations and representative bodies and work closely with international and non governmental organisations. We also develop dialogues with trade associations to develop appropriate standards and guidelines for our industry.
