Safety culture

The safety of all employees is one of our core values and we consider it to be a major priority. We believe that everyone's behaviour contributes to an injury free workplace and we do not accept that injuries are inevitable.

Our expectation is that everyone who comes to work will go home uninjured for their entire working life. We expect everyone to adhere to our safety standards and 'do the job right and do it safely'.

Creating a team safety culture

We have realised that safety is not about numbers - it's about people. In the past, we have implemented systems and set targets, but while they have moved us forward, they were not enough in themselves to help us meet our goal of an injury free workplace. So we knew that by simply doing more of the same was not going to move us forward.

To this end, we began to see that people's behaviours were governed not only by systems, rules and procedures, but also by their personal beliefs and values, and the company culture within which they have to operate. So we have adopted an integrated approach that takes systems, individual values, company culture and people's behaviour into account.

Now our leaders are trained to champion safety improvement to demonstrate genuine commitment and active care. Our employees are also proactively involved in all areas of safety management and responsible for identifying and managing risks in the workplace.

On top of that, all incidents are reported and actions are swiftly taken to prevent a recurrence, while world-class systems drive excellent leadership.

In addition, we want our employees to reach an understanding that safety is not just something that needs to happen in the workplace. For instance, if someone wears safety glasses at home, in front of their family, while doing a dangerous task, we will feel satisfied that our safety culture is working.
