Environment

We know that some of our activities have an unavoidable impact on the immediate environment of a community, even though we seek to minimise these as much as possible. So we take a proactive approach. In other words, we enhance the biodiversity of the area around a mine with the aim of not just leaving the land as we found it, but to returning it to even better condition.

How we manage the local environment

We work within our Communities Standard to consult with our neighbours so as to better understand the environmental aspects and impacts of what we intend to do. We then feed back the results into informed discussions with our employees, investors and other interested parties such as key NGOs.

After that, we build what we have learned into systems to manage and minimise those impacts, all the while taking care that we are in compliance with local laws. We then set targets and publicly report on our progress against them.

We also develop strategies to help us manage specific aspects of environmental management, and we have strategies to help us focus on how we deal with water, biodiversity, product stewardship and acid rock drainage.
