Engagement

We recognise that actively engaging with others in the wider world helps us to promote sustainable development in a way that is critical to the success of our business. So we have established relationships with a broad range of organisations and individuals, including investors, government, communities, industry bodies and civil society groups.

And we have found that by engaging with others we can pool skills, resources and expertise to help us achieve performance that would have been difficult to attain on our own.

How we engage with others

Since 1995, we have been developing a global NGO partnership programme with organisations that have expertise in sustainable development. They help us to supplement our existing work on biodiversity, environmental protection and community health with their expertise in the biodiversity of bird life, flora, fauna and forestry, as well as water management, climate change and product stewardship.

Cross sector engagement takes many forms. We have good relations with local community groups and have established trusts and foundations at local, regional or national level.

We also carry out stakeholder research around the world, and present our views to governments and inter-governmental organisations, like the United Nations agencies on matters affecting our business.  Further, we contribute to developing legislation and regulation that impact on our global business through our appropriate engagement with governments wherever we operate.

In addition, we actively participate in many international representative bodies in order to further our business interests and to help raise industry standards.
