Although mining is not a labour intensive activity, payments to labour represent an important injection of capital in the economy, particularly at the local and regional level.

Our results

Our workforce grew to about 39,000 during 2007 (compared to 35,000 in 2006) and the Acquisition of Alcan brought a further 67,000 people into the Group. 

In 2007, we paid US$4,175 million in wages and employee benefits compared to US$2,658 million we paid in 2006.
