Investors are increasingly considering the environmental, social and ethical impacts of their investments. As a result, there is now greater emphasis on companies providing more information on their non financial performance.

Here are some examples of where we have received external recognition for this:

  • The FTSE4Good Index Series has been designed to measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards, and to facilitate investment in those companies. Transparent management and criteria alongside the FTSE brand make FTSE4Good the index of choice for the creation of Socially Responsible Investment products. In September 2007 we were invited to join the FTSE4Good index.
  • Business in the Community's (BitC) Corporate Responsibility Index is a voluntary self-assessment benchmarking the extent to which corporate strategy is integrated into business practice throughout an organisation. It provides a benchmark for community, environment, marketplace and workplace management practices and performance in a range of environmental and social impact areas material to the business. In 2007, Rio Tinto was rated in the global top ten businesses (out of 128) and achieved a Platinum rating (>95%). Download our BitC Feedback report.
  • Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) is comprised of 68 FT500 companies that show distinction in their responses to the Carbon Disclosure Project survey based on their reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and assessment of a company's climate change strategy. In 2007, Rio Tinto achieved the maximum CDLI score of 100, Rio Tinto was again rated highest in the metals, mining and steel sector. Download our submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project here.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) - Rio Tinto is included in the 2008 version of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the DJSI STOXX index.
