Economic partnerships
Rio Tinto aims to work with communities to build on and benefit from the economic opportunities generated by the presence of a mining operation.
For Rio Tinto, strong regional economies offer many advantages, including access to a pool of local employees, locally provided services and supplies, more stable local government, better access to institutions such as banks, schools and health facilities, and a more attractive community and lifestyle for employees. For the community, Rio Tinto can help offer economic independence through direct employment, business development and training.
Where possible, Rio Tinto mining operations link with local community organisations, non government organisations and government agencies to support regional development initiatives.
A key aim of many of Rio Tinto business unit's trusts, funds and foundations is to work in partnership with local organisations to increase the economic viability of their communities.
Australian National University

These insights assist in strategic assessment of the opportunities in China.
The partnership also aims to strengthen research and teaching on the Chinese economy. The Rio Tinto Chair in Chinese Economy has been established at ANU's Crawford School of Economics and Government. Scholarships, internships and executive training programmes have also been developed.
