GRI - Environmental indicators

GRI Indicator Description of indicator Links to information Level of reporting

EN1

Weight of materials used by weight or volume.

Supply chain
Energy use
Water inputs
Land access

Partially reported.

EN2

Percentage of materials used that are recycled input materials.

We expect to increase our use of material derived from wastes external to the organisation. Currently the percentage of this material is negligible compared to the total amount of materials used by Rio Tinto. Recycling
Water balance
Water inputs

Fully reported.

EN3

Direct energy consumption by primary energy source.

Energy use

Fully reported.

EN4

Indirect energy consumption broken down by primary source.

Energy use

Fully reported.

EN8

Total water withdrawal by source

Water
Water inputs

EN11

Location, and size of land owned, leased, managed in, or adjacent to, protected areas as well as areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas.

Fully reported.

EN16

Total direct, and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight.

Climate change and energy
Climate change position
Greenhouse gas emissions

Fully reported.

EN17

Other relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight.

Climate change and energy
Climate change position
Greenhouse gas emissions

Fully reported.

EN19

Emissions of ozone-depleting substances by weight.

We have been eliminating the use of ozone depleting substances for many years in line with local legislation and environmentally good practice. Materiality assessment shows this topic is not sufficiently important to our stakeholders to warrant inclusion in our reporting.

Fully reported.

EN20

NOx, SOx, and other significant air emissions by type, and weight.

Air quality
SOx
Fluoride
Dust

Fully reported.

EN21

Total water discharge by quality, and destination.

EN22

Total weight of waste by type, and disposal method

Waste
Waste rock
Tailings
Acid Rock Drainage
Non Mineral Waste
Recycling

Fully reported.

EN23

Total number, and volume of significant spills

Goals and targets
Environmental management

Fully reported.

EN26

Initiatives to mitigate the environmental impacts of products and services, and extent of impact mitigation.

Product Stewardship
Product Stewardship Engagement

Fully reported.

EN27

Percentage of products sold and their packaging materials that are reclaimed by product category.

Rio Tinto's major products are mined metals and minerals, which are sold in bulk rather than in packages (exceptions include borates and talc).  Packaging materials are not generally recycled, but products shipped in packages constitute less than 5% of Rio Tinto's business. There were no product recalls.
Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are recycled at rates greater than 70% because of their high value.  Aluminium, copper, iron, titanium and zinc all have a recycle rate that ranges form 40-50%. Coal is not recycled as it is consumed.  Borates, talc and zircon are not recycled due to the low value of the mineral at the end of life.

Fully reported.

EN28

Monetary value of significant fines and total number of non-monetary sanctions for non-compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Our perfomance
Environmental management

Fully reported.

MM3

The number/percentage of sites identified as requiring biodiversity management plans and the number/percentage of sites with plans in place. Also include criteria for deciding that a biodiversity management plan is required and the key components of a plan.
