Employee training
People Development
People development in Rio Tinto is focused on ensuring leadership and technical development across the Group in support of our business objectives. In addition to a comprehensive and customised suite of leadership development programmes from Supervisor through to Managing Director, Rio Tinto has developed a number of functional development programmes for functional professionals and practitioners (e.g. Mining, Marketing, Human Resources) across the Group. To ensure a needs based approach all Rio Tinto's people development activities are based on a rigorous analysis of the functional and leadership skills and behaviours required for each role.
In addition our Business Units deliver Business Unit specific and relevant training to their employees.
Beyond formal programmes Rio Tinto is also developing its own approach to coaching which will further strengthen our people development activities. This plus an increased focus on training and e-learning are key to Rio Tinto's people development strategy moving forward.
Our results
In 20061 over 1,000 leaders attended leadership development programmes and a further 250 attended functional development programmes. In addition over 200 graduates attended the Rio Tinto Graduate Development Programme. Participant and stakeholder feedback remains positive.
