Diamonds, Gold and Silver - sustainable products mined with care

Rio Tinto holds a significant position in the diamond industry.

Through its 100 per cent control of Argyle Diamonds in Australia, 60 per cent ownership of the Diavik mine in Canada and a 78 per cent share in the Murowa mine in Africa, Rio Tinto is the world's largest producer of natural coloured diamonds, as well as a major gem producer.

But market share is certainly not the only measure of our value. The way we go about our business is also of interest to the wider community and these issues of product stewardship" are something in which we invest much time and energy.

Increasingly, our customers want to know that the products we produce have integrity: that we don't offer "conflict" diamonds to the market, that we offer exemplary working conditions to our employees, that we respect the environments in which we operate and that we add value to the communities into which we venture. For our own part, we also want to know that the people we do business with are also operating ethically.

For some time, Rio Tinto has been in the vanguard of reform in the jewellery industry to build better practices in governance, environmental and social performance and has been recognised as the resource sector leader in sustainable development policy and practice. These are achievements of which the company is justifiably proud.

Read about the scope and impact of these important industry initiatives and the ways in which more sustainable futures are being built for the communities in which we operate, in very different landscapes across the world.
