Human rights

We support and respect human rights consistent with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and actively seek to ensure we are not complicit in human rights abuses committed by others. We also support a number of international commitments and are dedicated to complying with these.

The way we work, our global code of business conduct, supported by our human rights policy and guidance note  and our Business integrity guidance provides the framework for our approach in this area.

We train our employees and contract security personnel to be aware of what the company expects of them regarding the rights of our people and the communities in and around our operations.

We are a signatory to a host of international commitments and standards, and we remain dedicated to meeting them. We continue to support the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, which were issued by UK and US governments in 2000. We were involved in the first steps to develop the principles with the aid of non government organisations.

We are also a founding member of the United Nationals Global Compact (UNGC) and we are active members of the UK Network and the Communication on Progress Working Group. The UNGC is a voluntary initiative for businesses committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti corruption.

We operate in a manner consistent with the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples (UNDIP) and sovereign obligations. We respect the land connection of indigenous communities and work with them in a spirit of reciprocity, transparency and recognition of their culture.

We also recognise that every indigenous community is unique and we reach specific agreement with each affected community on how it wants to engage with us in the development and performance of our operations.
