The strength of the Kennecott brand in Utah provides further weight to the development proposition. A recent survey found nine out of ten Utahns familiar with Kennecott Utah Copper, its business model and its history. Sixty per cent of respondents were found to have a very favourable perception of the company and its long term commitment to anything it undertakes.

One of the best proofs of any project's sustainability is its ability to benefit all the stakeholders. Envision Utah's Greg Bell is in no doubt about the benefits for Salt Lake Valley: "Daybreak will provide its residents with a beautifully designed, mixed use community." Workers living in Daybreak will be able to commute easily to jobs in downtown Salt Lake City, or take up the new employment opportunities being created in the development itself. Families and friends can enjoy the prospect of living and growing old together in a stable, lively and safe environment.

Daybreak presents no less attractive outcomes for Rio Tinto. High profile and authentic, the development contributes to the Group's overall drive towards sustainable development. It enhances the reputation associated with Kennecott and Rio Tinto for high quality long term thinking and action, and further strengthens relationships with the local community.

The business benefits are just as significant. Land development in the Salt Lake valley unlocks the value of Rio Tinto assets in a completely new way. Otherwise empty land is being put to profitable use, via sale to builders who have proven they are committed to the Utah building market and are capable of achieving construction to the high standards stipulated by Kennecott Land. Moreover, the rail lines formerly used to haul ore between different parts of the mine now afford a valuable infrastructure base for future transportation links between the new communities.
