The elementary school will also function as a community centre. Parents and grandparents will be able to drop off their youngsters and then meet for coffee, yoga, classes and other sporting and social activities. As well as bringing adults together, this approach makes it economically feasible to offer a greater range of recreational facilities for the school children; and it ensures more efficient and effective use of the building well beyond the confines of the school day.
The school's combination of both building and education design excellence prompted Berry Newbold to comment: "It is rare for a land developer to approach a school district and request that they join in the conceptual planning for a community's long term educational needs. This school has great promise as a model for our school district."
Collaboration also distinguishes Kennecott Land's approach to developing economic opportunities. Kennecott Land representatives attend regional business fairs, working side by side with the state's two major economic development organizations to bring high paying jobs to Utah. Kennecott Land has also formed the company Copper Rock Development specifically to partner seasoned players in the business development community.
Another form of collaboration helping to underpin Daybreak's appeal and economic success focuses on transportation. A major development of this kind depends crucially on connections within the developed area and to other major centres in the region. That's why Kennecott Land initiated a unique partnership to accelerate construction of a light railway for the area.
The Mid-Jordan light rail line feeds into the Daybreak town centre, creating a walkable work and shopping area. "Kennecott Land played a leadership role in the planning to bring light rail to the southwest valley. Through this public-private partnership, we hope to build a light rail line into the Daybreak community by 2009," said Vicki Varela, Kennecott Land vice president, public policy.
