Adjoining the mine are approximately 38,000 hectares spread across the Oquirrh Mountains and the foothills of the western side of Salt Lake Valley. Originally owned by Kennecott Utah Copper, the land was transferred earlier this year to another company proudly bearing the Kennecott brand - Kennecott Land.
The company was established in April 2001 to focus exclusively on developing Kennecott Utah Copper's significant non mineral land and water rights. Today, Kennecott Land is the name behind the ground breaking Daybreak development, which is providing a solution to Utah's population growth while transforming perceptions of what land development is about.
Kennecott Land president Peter McMahon explains: "The guiding principle behind everything we do is building sustainable communities - great places where people want to live, work and play today, and also where families and friends can grow, mature, evolve and still stay close to each other."
Located in the City of South Jordan, the Daybreak development covers almost 1,700 hectares in a carefully thought through mix of homes, retail and business space, open spaces and recreational areas - all within a 40km radius of downtown Salt Lake City.
For Kennecott Land, a sustainable community has three main pillars: community building, economic development and environmental protection.
From the outset, the development broke the mould with its unique approach to establishing educational opportunities that will build communities. For the first time, Jordan School District's superintendent Berry Newbold found himself being invited into partnership with a developer. The elementary school born out of that partnership is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2005.
